Phung Tien Temple

Phung Tien Temple was built in 1814 under the reign of Emperor Gia Long with the name Hoang Nhan Temple, the place to worship Empress Thua Thien Cao (wife of Emperor Gia Long). In 1837, Emperor Minh Mang changed the name of the temple to Phung Tien, as the place to worship the Emperors and Empresses of the Nguyen Dynasty from Emperor Gia Long onwards. This Temple is of the royal family, so women are allowed to attend ceremonies, and worship ancestors of the Nguyen Dynasty every day.
Phung Tien Temple was built on a large scale with a total area of 8,776m2, surrounded by a wall of 3m high. Inside the temple, the buildings were built proportionally, divided into independent areas, separated from the outside by walls and gate. Phung Tien Temple is a "double house", the main hall of which has nine compartments, the front hall of which has 11 compartments keeping the holy tablets of emperors and empresses. The temple has 1 main gate located in the South and 4 auxiliary gates located in the North. Behind the main gate, there is a screen, and behind which is a large water tank keeping a geomantic rockery.

After 1947, Phung Tien Temple was completely collapsed. Only the foundation and some severely damaged auxiliary works remained. During 2017-2019, Hue Monuments Conservation Centre cooperated with the German Association for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage together with German conservation experts and Hue's skilled artisans and craftsmen to preserve and restore the Gate, Screen and Water Tank-Rockery with its original values.
