Under the monarchical dynasties in Vietnam, the spirit of national self-respect, the pride of the nation and the assertion of the national independence and the autonomy were highly appreciated. This view was intentionaly highlighted from the early days of the Nguyen dynasty by Nguyen emperors and reflected clearly in the literal decoration on Thai Hoa Palace where was once the ruling centre of the dynasty and a symbol of the dynasty’s power.

Thai Hoa palace was built in 1805 for the important ceremonies and grand audiences of the Nguyen dynasty (1802-1945) as the coronation, the emperor’s birthday anniversary, the National Day, etc. The palace is decorated with different designs and materials. Especially, on the horizontal decorative panels (both in the interior and exterior of the palace), on the roof ridges and the roof wall, there are 297 panels carved with ancient Chinese characters in verse couplets. The exhibition will introduce 34 typical poems carved on Thai Hoa palace (transcribed and translated by Hai Trung). These poems reflect the pride of the national tradition of culture and of the highly-regularized dynastic regime; the praise of the peace, the unity and the prosperity of the country.

Undenially, the literal decoration on Thai Hoa palace in particular as well as on monuments of the Nguyen dynasty in general are the unique form of decoration on architectures reflecting the highly –developed values of history, culture and aesthetics under the Nguyen.
